Preventative Dentistry

Learning how to properly care for your teeth can lead to a healthy body and lifetime of smiles.

Our team of doctors, hygienists and technicians will teach you about and implement preventative measures to avoid enamel loss, gingivitis, decay, cavities and periodontitis, plus help you and your family learn good habits and effective techniques for keeping your mouth healthy, strong and bacteria free. This is especially important as children grow and learn how to care for their teeth and gums, as well as aging adults who may be at risk of losing teeth.

Preventative and educational services include:

Brushing

For a healthy mouth and smile the American Dental Association recommends you:

Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.
Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
Make sure to use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.

In addition, Northern Nevada Family Dental recommends using electric tooth brushes due to the benefits associated with reduced plaque, healthier gums, and reduced stains.

Flossing

Flossing Facts:

Flossing removes food (and bacteria) that brushing can’t, and flossing has been shown to reduce inflammation.

Routine Cleanings

Children should experience their first dental visit at least six months after the first tooth appears or no later than you child’s first birthday. Proper brushing and flossing get kids started with good dental health and help prevent the development of cavities. Regular preventative dental visits help to ensure a young person enters adulthood with strong, healthy teeth that can be expected to serve them well for their lifetime.

Cavitron

Cavitron systems lead the competition with innovative features and benefits that enhance the scaling experience during your dental hygiene appointment. Equipped with quality and performance, the Cavitron continues to innovate to meet clinical needs and patient demands.

Fluoride Treatments

Use Toothpaste and Mouthrinse with Fluoride. Brush twice a day (morning and night) or as directed by your dentist and physician. For children younger than 3 years, start brushing their teeth as soon as they start to appear in the mouth by using fluoride toothpaste in an amount no more than a smear or the size of a grain of rice. For children 3 to 6 years old, use no more than a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Always supervise your child’s brushing to make sure they use the right amount and try to get your child to spit out most of the toothpaste. Mouthwash with fluoride can help make your teeth more resistant to decay, but children six years or younger should not use it.

At Northern Nevada Family Dental, we recommend those over six years of age to receive a fluoride varnish post hygiene appointment to help strengthen enamel.

Gum Care

Gum recession is an incredibly widespread problem that dentists at NNFD diagnose and treat on a daily basis by halting the progress of the recession and preventing it from occurring in the future.

Digital X-rays

Reduced amount of radiation and immediate images compared to conventional x-ray film.
